The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting

As of March 21, 2020 at 01:50 GMT, there have been 19643 confirmed cases (up 5,376 cases or 37% over yesterday) and 263 deaths due to coronavirus COVID-19 in the United States.
Just three days after seven Bay Area counties instituted a shelter-in-place mandate to slow the spread of the COVID-19 disease, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a similar order over the entire state.
Newsom said the new statewide mandate would take effect starting Friday and mirror the Bay Area’s mandate that took effect on Tuesday.
“This is a moment in time, and it’s a challenging moment, and it may be many moments in the foreseeable future, but nonetheless we will process, we will work together through this moment of challenge and we will triumph over fear, anxiety and this disease,” Newsom said.
Under the shelter-in-place mandate, “non-essential” businesses across the state will be required to close, and residents will be limited to leaving their homes only for “essential” reasons, such as to obtain medications, shop for groceries and supplies, care for family members and exercise outdoors.

In addition to issuing a “stay at home” order for Illinois, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced another coronavirus-related death, a Cook County woman in her 70s. It’s the state’s fifth death associated with COVID-19.

The shortest length of time the virus lived in the respiratory tract of a survivor was eight days. And perhaps most shocking of all, in some cases, the virus persisted for as long as 37 days.

NY Gov Cuomo orders state 'on pause’ says non-essential workers must stay home
Gov. Andrew Cuomo dramatically ramped up New York’s coronavirus shutdown Friday as the crisis spirals out of control.
The governor said the state is being put “on pause” and said people should only leave homes for real urgent emergencies.
He ordered all non-essential workers to stay home as the number of cases shot up to more than 7,100 -- and 35 deaths.
“This is not life as usual,” Cuomo said. “Deal with it.”

At Elmhurst, a
545-bed public hospital that serves a large population of undocumented
immigrants and low-income residents, coronavirus patients have begun to
crowd out others. Protective gear is running low. Doctors are worried
there will be a shortage of ventilators.
Outside the facility, at a tent housing a new mobile-testing site, a line snaked around the building on Friday, a sign of the demand on testing and how much worse the influx could become.
